May 25, 2006Liberal Talk Radio on Life SupportAccording to the RadioEqualizer blog. . . "Air America Radio's acting CEO has been ordered to either cut millions from the bloated network's budget or condemn the left- wing talk radio experiment to the ash heap of history, the Radio Equalizer has exclusively learned." My Deep Thoughts: Of course, every attempt at liberal talk radio has failed miserably because these attempts have been built upon a deeply flawed assumption: Namely, that millions of listeners tune into Rush and Sean each week becuase they want to be told what to think. In reality, we tune in because Rush and Shaun are voicing ? often in an entertaining or validating way ? what we already think. Before Talk Radio fueled a resurgance of AM, if you were of a conservative bent, you never had your values or views validated through the media. Liberals dominated ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, NPR and CNN. On the contrary, your views were constantly attacked, mocked or, at minimum, ignored. With the exception of Fox News Channel, that continues to be the case today. Thus, liberal Americans don't need talk radio because they get their biases validated everytime they turn on the television ? and not just through the MSM news, but also through chat shows hosts like Oprah and The View; through comics like David Letterman and Jon Stewart; and through most television dramas and comedys.

May 19, 2006The Left's Commitment to Free SpeechToday National Review's Rich Lowry was live-blogging as Sen. John McCain attempted to deliver a commencement address at the liberal New School University. Read part of Lowry's eyewitness account below and bring it to mind the next time you hear some preening, self-righteous leftist going on about how conservatives don't care about free speech or freedom of expression.... McCain delivers a beautiful prose poem to America, national service, and civil debate (congrats Mark Salter, as ever), and gets derided for it, of course. ?I supported the war in Iraq.? Boos. Explains the war was not for cheap oil. A little heckling: ?You're full of it!? Says he thought the ?country's interest and values demanded? the war. Someone shouts: ?Wrongly!? Someone else: ?More poetry!? (A reference to lines from Yeats McCain had quoted earlier.) He says ?whether [the war] was necessary or not...we all should shed a tear? for those who have sacrificed in it. Some hissing. Shouting. He eventually enters into a Bushian rift: ?All people share the desire to be free?; ?human rights are above the state and beyond history?; we are ?insisting that all people have the right to be free.? Someone shouts: ?We're graduating, not voting!? Lots of derisive shouts and laughter and applause. As McCain continues with a personal story, a student shouts: ?It's about my life, not yours.? McCain: ?When I was a young man, I thought glory was the highest value...? Groans from the students. ?It's not about you!? ?Sit down!? McCain circles back around to the theme of civility: ?We are not enemies, we are compatriots...? Boos, shouts. McCain: It ?should remain an argument among friends?; we should be ?respectful of the goodness in each other.? Literally one person applauds. McCain goes on to tell his story about his reconciliation with an opponent of the Vietnam War: ?I had a friend once...? Groans, boos. He talks about forgiving his friend who dissented from the war. Hostile rumblings from the students. He says after the reconciliation, he and his friend ?worked together for shared ideals.? A shout: ?We don't share your ideals!? As McCain closes there is a mix of boos and applause, and a few people even stand to clap.

May 18, 2006"What's Holland Reading These Days?"Gosh, thanks for asking. Well, let's see...I usually have several books going at once. I'm currently reading: Honor: A History by James Bowman--which is providing amazing insights into the Arab/Musilim mindset. It is also, surprisingly, helping me see some of the Old Testament biblical accounts in a new light. In Our Hands: A Plan to Replace the Welfare State by Charles Murray?Obviously, given the title, this book isn't everyone's cup of tea. (What? You don't occasionally get a powerful hankerin' for a good page-turner on welfare reform?) But if you've ever noticed how well-intentioned government attempts to help people tend to make matters worse and wondered if there was a more effective alternative... Well, here you go. The Bible by God. Much better than The Da Vinci Code. Just ordered from Amazon:

May 04, 2006Let Us PrayToday is the National Day of Prayer here in the U.S. of A. To mark they day, I post a prayer spoken by Pastor Joe Wright to open a session of the Kansas State Legislature on November 30, 1998. Paul Harvey aired the prayer on "The Rest of the Story," bringing it to national attention and launching millions of forwarded emails. This is the prayer: "Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance.

It's boycott a gringo day. I'm a gringo, the day's half over, and I haven't been boycotted once. I will not be disrespected like this. I demand to be boycotted!
